Deep in the remote forests of far East Gippsland, Errinundra National Park is a sanctuary of ancient cool-temperate rainforest that feels a world away from the coastal crowds. This is one of Victoria’s most significant wilderness areas, sheltering towering eucalypts, myrtle beech and tree ferns that have stood for centuries. For travellers who love raw nature and genuine solitude, Errinundra offers a rare chance to walk among living giants without another soul in sight.
Highlights & What to See
- Errinundra Saddle & Rainforest Walks – The heart of the park, where boardwalks loop through dense myrtle beech forest and giant mountain ash. Keep an eye out for lyrebirds and wallabies.
- Coast Range Lookout – A short drive to a viewpoint that gazes over the unbroken forest canopy to the distant ocean – pure wilderness as far as the eye can see.
- Goolengook River & Campsites – Secluded riverside spots perfect for a picnic or overnight stay; the river is crystal clear and inviting on a warm day.
- Mount Errinundra – The park’s highest point, accessible via a rough 4WD track, offers panoramic views and a sense of being on top of the world.
- East Gippsland Rail Trail – The park borders this multi-use trail, ideal for cycling or walking through historic railway cuttings and ferny gullies.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day to explore the main walks and lookout; two days is better if you want to camp and truly absorb the silence. The park is remote – fill up with fuel and supplies before you leave Orbost or Cann River. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended for some tracks, especially after rain.
