Plunging 200 metres into a fern-filled gorge, Ellenborough Falls is one of Australia’s tallest single-drop waterfalls and a breathtaking detour in the upper Hunter region. The thundering cascade, often called the 'Niagara of the South', is at its most dramatic after rain when the spray catches the light. A short walk leads you to several lookout platforms – each offering a different perspective of the sheer drop and the forested valley beyond. Pack a picnic and arrive early to experience the falls in relative solitude.
Highlights & What to See
- The Main Lookout – a fenced platform right at the cliff edge, offering a direct view of the waterfall plunging into the abyss; on sunny days you’ll likely see rainbows in the mist.
- Ellenborough Falls Walking Track – a steep 1.5 km return trail descending into the gorge via 800+ steps; the reward is a close-up view from the base, surrounded by rainforest and the sound of falling water.
- Dingo Gate Lookout – a quieter viewpoint downstream, ideal for a different angle of the gorge and a picnic with fewer crowds.
- Bulga National Park – the falls are within this park; after visiting, explore the park’s walking trails and look out for lyrebirds and wallabies.
- Elands Village – a tiny historic hamlet near the falls; stop for a coffee or browse the local craft shop.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at Ellenborough Falls – enough time to admire the main lookout, walk down to the base (allow 45 minutes return) and enjoy a picnic. If you’re keen on photography or want to explore the surrounding national park, budget half a day. Combine it with a drive through the winding roads of the Bulga Plateau for a full day trip from the Hunter Valley wine region.
