Stretching over 100 kilometres through the lush forests and rolling farmland of Victoria's far east, the East Gippsland Rail Trail is a multi-use path that follows the former Orbost railway line. This rail-trail offers a gentle gradient, making it ideal for cyclists, walkers, and horse riders of all abilities. The trail passes through towering eucalypt forests, over historic timber bridges, and alongside the sparkling Snowy River, with plenty of opportunities to spot kangaroos, lyrebirds, and even platypuses.
Highlights & What to See
- Snowy River Bridge – The trail's centrepiece is this magnificent 390-metre-long wooden trestle bridge, the longest of its kind in Australia, offering stunning views over the river and surrounding wilderness.
- Nowa Nowa to Orbost section – This 30-kilometre stretch is considered the most scenic, winding through dense bushland and crossing several smaller bridges and creeks.
- Buchan Caves – A short detour from the trail leads to the spectacular limestone Buchan Caves, where guided tours reveal ancient stalactites and stalagmites.
- Lakes Entrance – At the trail's western end, this fishing town is the gateway to the Gippsland Lakes, perfect for a seafood lunch or a boat cruise.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep your eyes peeled for wombats, echidnas, and the elusive platypus in the quieter sections near the Snowy River.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors tackle the trail in 2 to 3 days, cycling 30–50 kilometres per day and staying overnight in towns like Nowa Nowa or Orbost. For a relaxed pace, allow 4 days to fully explore side attractions such as the Buchan Caves or Lakes Entrance. Walkers or horse riders should budget 4–5 days for the full length. The trail is best enjoyed between October and April, when the weather is mild and the bush is alive with wildflowers.
