Perched on the edge of the Great Escarpment, Dorrigo is a lush, misty highland town that feels a world away from the coastal heat. Its star attraction is the World Heritage-listed Dorrigo National Park, where ancient Antarctic beech forests and thundering waterfalls create a landscape of ethereal beauty. This is a place for deep nature immersion, with well-maintained walking trails that lead you through giant stinging trees, past glowing fireflies (summer), and to lookout platforms with vertiginous views over the rainforest canopy. The town itself has a relaxed, creative vibe, with a handful of artisan galleries, a famous pie shop, and a weekend market that draws locals and travellers alike.
Highlights & What to See
- Dorrigo National Park – The centrepiece: walk the Skywalk (a raised boardwalk through the canopy), the Wonga Walk (a 6.6 km loop past several waterfalls), and the short walk to Crystal Shower Falls, where you can step behind the cascade.
- Dangar Falls – A powerful, easy-to-reach waterfall on the Bielsdown River, perfect for a picnic and a swim in the plunge pool.
- Dorrigo Rainforest Centre – A superb interpretive centre with exhibits on Gondwana rainforest ecology, plus a café with views over the valley.
- Dorrigo Pie Shop – A local institution; grab a gourmet pie (try the beef and red wine) before heading into the park.
- Dorrigo Folk Museum – A charming collection of pioneer-era artefacts that tells the story of the region’s logging and dairy history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least a full day to Dorrigo: a morning exploring the national park’s main walks (allow 2–3 hours for a solid hike), lunch at the pie shop or Rainforest Centre café, then an afternoon at Dangar Falls and a wander through town. If you’re a keen bushwalker or birdwatcher, consider two nights so you can tackle the longer Lyrebird Link track or explore the nearby Never Never Creek area. The park is at its most dramatic after rain, when waterfalls are in full roar.
