Deepwater is a serene hamlet cradled in the upper reaches of the Hunter Valley, where the world-class vineyards of the lower valley give way to rolling green hills, national parks and a slower, more rural rhythm. This is the Hunter Valley away from the crowds – a place for quiet exploration, local produce and genuine country hospitality.
Highlights & What to See
- Barrington Tops National Park – A World Heritage-listed wilderness of ancient rainforests, alpine meadows and wild rivers. Hike the Gloucester River Walk or drive the scenic loop for kangaroos and lyrebirds.
- Gloucester Tops Lookout – Sweeping views over the valley and the distant coast; a short walk rewards with a picnic spot that feels on top of the world.
- Deepwater Homestead – A historic property offering farm-stay experiences, horse riding and a taste of rural life amid rolling pastures.
- Local Produce & Farm Gates – Pick up artisan cheeses, organic vegetables and free-range eggs from roadside stalls and small farms dotted along the back roads.
- Stroud & The National Motor Racing Museum – A 20-minute drive south, this charming historic town has a fascinating museum dedicated to Australia’s racing heritage, plus great café stops.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days allows you to explore the national park on a full-day hike, spend a morning at the homestead and still have time to meander through the farm gates and nearby historic villages. If you’re combining with lower Hunter wineries, plan a longer loop of 4–5 days to do both regions justice – the drive between Deepwater and Pokolbin is only an hour, but the pace here is deliberately unhurried.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Gloucester – A friendly country town with a vibrant main street, great bakeries and access to the Bucketts Way scenic drive.
- Barrington Tops National Park – Extend your stay to tackle the longer trails or try trout fishing in the mountain streams.
- Stroud – Historic architecture, antique shops and the motor museum make it a perfect half-day detour.
- Pokolbin – The heart of Hunter Valley wine country, with cellar doors, restaurants and hot-air ballooning, all an hour south.
- Maitland – A riverside city with a lively arts scene, heritage walks and excellent farmers markets.
