Buronga, a quiet riverside hamlet on the Murray River, is the gateway to the wilder side of the Murray–Darling basin. With its back to the river and its face to the Mallee scrub, it offers a genuine outback-meets-waterfront experience that few travellers discover. The pace is slow, the birdlife abundant, and the sunsets over the river are the stuff of postcards.
Highlights & What to See
- Murray River National Park – Paddle a canoe through the backwaters or hike among ancient river red gums; keep an eye out for kangaroos and emus along the Katarapko Creek loop.
- Buronga Riverside Reserve – A peaceful picnic spot with walking trails, a boat ramp, and the best views of the Murray’s broad, slow flow. Bring binoculars for the abundant birdlife.
- Mildura’s Wine & Food Scene – Just across the bridge, Mildura’s vineyards, craft breweries, and farmers’ markets are a short drive away. Don’t miss the Sunday market for local produce.
- Punkah Creek Walk – A short, easy boardwalk through a wetland teeming with frogs, dragonflies, and waterbirds. Ideal for families or a quiet morning stroll.
- Sunset at the Murray River – Find a spot on the riverbank as the sky turns orange and the water goes glassy. It’s a daily show that never gets old.
Suggested Time to Spend
Buronga itself is a half-day stop, but you’ll want at least two days to properly explore the river and nearby Mildura. Arrive in the afternoon, take a sunset stroll, then spend the next day paddling the national park and exploring the wineries. If you’re self-driving, it’s a perfect overnight break between Adelaide and Sydney or en route to the Flinders Ranges.
