Bunyeroo Gorge

Carved through ancient red-rock country, Bunyeroo Gorge slices into the heart of the Flinders Ranges with a drama that feels almost prehistoric. This is outback South Australia at its most raw: sheer quartzite cliffs, ghost gums clinging to crevices, and a silence broken only by the call of a wedge-tailed eagle. For travellers weaving a self-drive itinerary through the Flinders, this gorge offers a detour that rewards with some of the most spectacular geological storytelling in the state.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 1–2 hours exploring the gorge and lookout. If you're doing the Brachina Gorge geological drive as well, budget a half-day. To really soak it in — perhaps with a picnic and a short walk — allow 3–4 hours. The gorge is on unsealed roads that are fine for 2WD in dry conditions, but check road reports after rain.
