Hawker is a tiny, atmospheric settlement in the northern reaches of the Flinders Ranges, South Australia. It's a classic outback town where red dirt roads, historic stone buildings, and vast, silent landscapes set the scene. For travellers on a self-drive through the Flinders, Hawker makes a practical base for exploring the dramatic gorges, ancient rock formations, and Aboriginal rock art of the region. The town itself has a pub, a few accommodation options, and a general store, but the real draw lies in the surrounding wilderness.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Hawker is best used as a base for two to three days. This allows a full day to explore Wilpena Pound and the national park, and another day to drive the Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges loop. If you're short on time, you can see the gorges in a long day from Hawker, but an overnight stay is recommended to appreciate the changing light on the ranges at sunrise and sunset.
