Brisbane Water National Park is a wild gem on the Central Coast of NSW, just an hour north of Sydney. This rugged park of sandstone escarpments, eucalypt forests, and hidden waterways offers a genuine escape into nature, with superb bushwalking, Aboriginal rock art, and panoramic views over the Hawkesbury River and Brisbane Water. It's less crowded than its southern neighbours, making it a perfect detour on a drive between Sydney and the Hunter Valley.
Highlights & What to See
- Bouddi Coastal Walk: A spectacular 8 km one-way track tracing the sandstone cliffs between Putty Beach and MacMasters Beach, with whale-watching lookouts and secret swimming coves.
- Girrakool Loop: An easy 2 km walk through lush rainforest to a series of pretty waterfalls and Aboriginal engraving sites – look for carved figures of kangaroos and fish.
- Piles Creek Loop: A moderate 4 km circuit descending into a deep sandstone gorge, crossing the creek via stepping stones and passing under a dramatic rock overhang.
- Warrah Lookout: A short drive from the park entrance, this viewpoint offers a sweeping panorama of the Hawkesbury River, Lion Island, and the Pacific Ocean.
- Aboriginal Rock Art: The park contains significant engraving sites, especially around the Girrakool and Bouddi areas, with some estimated to be thousands of years old.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors come for a half-day walk, but to fully appreciate the park – combining a coastal walk with a waterfall loop and a picnic lunch – plan for a full day. If you're short on time, the Girrakool Loop and Warrah Lookout can be done in 2–3 hours. The park is best visited from late autumn to spring (April–October) when the weather is mild and the waterfalls are flowing. Avoid summer weekends when the limited parking fills early.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Bouddi National Park: Adjacent to Brisbane Water, this coastal park offers more stunning ocean walks and beaches like Killcare and Maitland Bay.
- Hawkesbury River: Take a scenic drive or ferry from Woy Woy to explore the river's historic towns, oyster farms, and wilderness.
- Hunter Valley Wine Region: About 90 minutes north, combine your nature fix with world-class wineries, cheese, and hot air ballooning.
