Stretching along the sapphire coast south of Merimbula, Bournda National Park is a wild tangle of eucalypt forest, heathlands and secluded beaches that feels a world away from the nearby holiday towns. This is the Sapphire Coast at its most untamed – a place for serious bushwalkers, birdwatchers and anyone who craves the sound of waves crashing against granite headlands without a crowd in sight.
Highlights & What to See
- Bournda Lagoon: A shimmering coastal lake perfect for kayaking or a quiet paddle; keep an eye out for black swans and sea eagles.
- Wallagoot Lake: Larger and more open, this lagoon offers excellent birdwatching and a popular walking track that loops around its shores.
- Bournda Island: Accessible at low tide via a sandbar, this rocky outcrop rewards explorers with panoramic views of the coastline and, in season, migrating whales.
- Horse Head Point: A dramatic headland with a short, steep walk leading to lookout platforms where you can watch for dolphins and seabirds.
- Bondi Lake Walking Track: A 5 km loop through scribbly gum forest and heath, passing a lovely swimming hole – bring your bathers.
- Kianinny Bay: A sheltered cove with a boat ramp and picnic facilities, ideal for launching a kayak or just soaking up the serene atmosphere.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give yourself at least a full day to properly explore Bournda. Start early with a walk to Horse Head Point, then spend the middle of the day paddling on Bournda Lagoon. In the afternoon, tackle the Bondi Lake loop or drive to Wallagoot Lake for sunset birdwatching. If you're a keen hiker, the 30 km Bournda Coast Walk can be done in two days with camping – book well ahead.
