The Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk is one of Sydney’s most spectacular urban trails, a 6-kilometre (3.7-mile) clifftop ramble that stitches together a string of golden beaches, rocky headlands, and ocean pools. This walk captures the essence of Sydney’s beach culture: salt-sprayed air, crashing waves, and a backdrop of sandstone cliffs and green parks. It’s a perfect half-day outing that can be done in either direction, though starting at Bondi and finishing at Coogee means the sun is at your back in the afternoon.
Highlights & What to See
- Bondi Beach – Australia’s most famous beach, with its iconic surf, Icebergs ocean pool, and buzzing esplanade. Arrive early to beat the crowds.
- Tamarama Beach – A small, glamorous cove nicknamed “Glamarama,” popular with sunbathers and bodyboarders.
- Bronte Beach – A family-friendly beach with a large park, playground, and another ocean pool. Great for a picnic or a dip.
- Clovelly Beach – A narrow, sheltered bay ideal for snorkelling and swimming; look for the underwater nature trail.
- Gordons Bay – A protected marine reserve with excellent snorkelling among colourful fish and kelp forests.
- Coogee Beach – The walk’s end, with a lively promenade, the historic Coogee Pavilion, and the Wylie’s Baths ocean pool.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 2 to 3 hours for the walk itself, but plan for a half-day (4–5 hours) if you stop for swims, snacks, or photos. The path is well-maintained and mostly flat, with a few stair sections. Start early morning to avoid the midday heat and crowds, or go late afternoon to catch the golden light over the ocean. You can easily combine it with a morning at Bondi and lunch at Coogee.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Bondi – Explore the cafes, boutiques, and the Bondi Markets (Sundays) before or after the walk.
- Coogee – Relax on the beach, swim at Wylie’s Baths, or have dinner at one of the seaside restaurants.
- Bronte – The Bronte Baths ocean pool and the surrounding park are perfect for a leisurely stop.
- Tamarama – A quieter beach for a quick dip away from the crowds.
- Clovelly – The snorkelling here is superb; bring a mask and fins.
- Waverley Cemetery – Perched on the cliffs between Bronte and Clovelly, this historic cemetery offers stunning ocean views and a fascinating glimpse into Sydney’s past.
