Bogong High Plains

Stretching across the roof of Victoria's Alpine National Park, the Bogong High Plains are a sprawling alpine plateau that feels a world away from the Hunter Valley's vineyards. This is Australia's largest alpine area, a treeless expanse of snow gums, wildflowers, and granite tors that transforms from a wildflower paradise in summer to a snow-covered playground in winter. For international travellers, it's a chance to experience the Australian Alps' raw beauty, with hiking, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing among the highlights.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors base themselves at Falls Creek for 2–3 days to fully appreciate the high plains. A day trip from Mount Beauty or Bright is possible but rushed – you'll want at least a full day for a summit hike and another for exploring the plateau's trails. In winter, a weekend (or longer) allows for skiing and snowshoeing. Plan for changeable weather: even in summer, pack warm layers and rain gear.
