Carved by convict labour in the early 19th century, the Bogey Hole is a historic ocean pool hewn from the sandstone cliffs at Newcastle's southern end. This rugged, rectangular basin fills with each crashing wave, offering a wild and invigorating swim with views across the Pacific. It's one of Australia's oldest surviving swimming enclosures and a beloved local spot for a bracing dip.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow about 1–2 hours for a visit: 20–30 minutes for a swim (check conditions – waves can be powerful), plus time to walk the Memorial Walk and soak up the views. Early morning or late afternoon is best for calmer seas and fewer crowds. If you're combining with Newcastle's city sights, half a day is ample.
