Birdsville might be a speck on the map in far western Queensland, but its name is legendary among outback travellers. This remote outpost, with a population of barely 100, is the gateway to the vast Simpson Desert and the starting point of the iconic Birdsville Track. Its rustic charm, raw red landscapes, and the famous Birdsville Hotel make it a quintessential Australian outback experience.
Highlights & What to See
- Birdsville Hotel – An outback icon, this historic pub is the social heart of town. Grab a cold beer on the verandah, soak up the character, and chat with locals and travellers swapping stories.
- Simpson Desert – The main draw. The desert’s parallel red sand dunes stretch for hundreds of kilometres. A 4WD is essential; the classic route is the French Line or the Rig Road. Climb Big Red, the tallest dune, for sunset views.
- Birdsville Track – This legendary 517 km outback road runs south to Marree in South Australia. It’s a self-drive adventure through stark, beautiful country, passing the ghost town of Farina and the Mungerannie Hotel.
- Birdsville Races – Held on the first weekend of September, this is one of Australia’s most iconic outback horse races. The town swells to thousands for a weekend of racing, camping, and revelry.
- Museum & Historical Precinct – The Birdsville Museum, housed in the old post office, tells the story of the town’s pastoral and Afghan cameleer history. Don’t miss the restored 1884 Royal Hotel ruins.
- Warburton River – When it flows after rare rain, this ephemeral river transforms the landscape into a lush, bird-filled oasis. Even dry, its wide sandy bed is a striking feature.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers spend one to two nights in Birdsville, using it as a base to explore the Simpson Desert and the Birdsville Track. If you’re driving the Track from Marree, plan a full day to cover the 517 km, with an overnight stop at Mungerannie. For a deeper desert 4WD adventure, allow three to four days to traverse the Simpson Desert from Birdsville to the French Line or to Poeppel Corner (where three state borders meet). The Birdsville Races weekend requires booking accommodation months in advance, but camping is a popular option.
