Just south of Port Macquarie, Billabong Zoo is a compact but charismatic wildlife park that punches well above its weight. Set in lush bushland, it offers close encounters with Australian animals in a relaxed, family-friendly setting — think koalas, kangaroos, and one of the largest collections of big cats in the state.
Highlights & What to See
- Koala Encounters: Get up close with these sleepy icons — you can pat them during scheduled sessions and learn about conservation efforts.
- Big Cat Precinct: See lions, tigers, and leopards, including rare white lions. The keeper talks are informative and the enclosures are spacious.
- Walk-through Aviaries: Stroll among free-flying rainbow lorikeets and other native birds; they’ll often land on your arm for a feed.
- Reptile House: Meet saltwater crocodiles, pythons, and goannas — a highlight for reptile fans.
- Kangaroo & Wallaby Yard: Hand-feed friendly roos and wallabies in a large, open enclosure — a classic Aussie experience.
- Nocturnal House: Spot bilbies, quolls, and other shy critters in a dimly lit habitat that mimics night-time.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours here, which is enough to see the main animal encounters and catch the scheduled keeper talks. If you have kids who love the interactive experiences, allow a half-day. The zoo is compact, so you can easily combine it with a morning at a nearby beach or a winery visit in the Port Macquarie region.
