Bells Line of Road is a spectacularly scenic drive across the Blue Mountains, offering a quieter and more intimate alternative to the busy Great Western Highway. This winding route from Richmond to Lithgow takes you through deep valleys, towering eucalypt forests, and past some of the region's most impressive lookouts and gardens. It's a perfect day trip from Sydney or a must-include leg in a self-drive itinerary through the Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Tomah Botanic Garden: A cool-climate branch of the Royal Botanic Garden, set at 1,000 metres elevation. Wander through stunning themed gardens and enjoy panoramic views over the Grose Valley.
- Zig Zag Railway: A heritage steam train that descends a steep escarpment via a series of switchbacks near Lithgow. A nostalgic ride with outstanding valley views.
- Bilpin Cider & Fruit Orchards: Known as the 'fruit bowl' of the Blue Mountains, Bilpin is dotted with orchards and cider houses. Stop for a tasting of crisp apple ciders and pick-your-own seasonal fruit.
- Mount Wilson: A tiny village famous for its grand private gardens, especially spectacular in autumn when the European trees turn brilliant red and gold. Many gardens open seasonally to the public.
- Blue Mountains Botanic Garden: At Mount Tomah, this garden showcases native Australian plants and offers several walking trails, including one to a lookout over the valley.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a full day to drive the 75-kilometre route from Richmond to Lithgow (or vice versa), with plenty of stops. Start early to enjoy the morning light at the gardens, have a cider lunch in Bilpin, and finish with the Zig Zag Railway in the afternoon. If you're incorporating it into a longer Blue Mountains–Hunter Valley road trip, plan for a leisurely day of driving with photo stops every 15–20 minutes.
