Bass Coast Rail Trail
The Bass Coast Rail Trail is a scenic 43-kilometre rail-trail that winds through the coastal landscapes of Victoria's Bass Coast region. Following the former Wonthaggi to Nyora railway line, this mostly flat, sealed path is perfect for cycling, walking, and horse riding, offering a relaxed way to explore the area's natural beauty, historic towns, and coastal vistas.
Highlights & What to See
- Wonthaggi to Anderson section – The most popular and scenic stretch, taking you through bushland, farmland, and coastal heath with glimpses of the ocean.
- Historic railway remnants – Look out for old trestle bridges, platforms, and the restored Wonthaggi Railway Station, which houses a small museum.
- Wildlife spotting – Keep an eye out for kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, and a variety of birdlife, especially in the early morning.
- Coastal views near Kilcunda – The trail offers stunning panoramas of the Bass Strait coastline, particularly from the Kilcunda Trestle Bridge.
- Local produce and cafes – Stop at towns like Wonthaggi, Anderson, or Kilcunda for fresh seafood, homemade pies, and artisan coffee.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full day if you want to cycle the entire trail at a leisurely pace, including stops for photos and food. For a half-day trip, cycle the 20-kilometre segment between Wonthaggi and Kilcunda, which offers the best coastal scenery and takes about 2–3 hours each way. Walkers can tackle shorter sections, such as the 5-kilometre stretch from Wonthaggi to the Anderson turnoff, allowing for a relaxed afternoon.
