Perched on the dramatic headland of Cape Byron, Arakwal National Park is a compact coastal gem that packs a punch. This small but ecologically rich park protects the sacred lands of the Arakwal people, who have cared for this coastline for millennia. The park’s star attraction is the Cape Byron Lighthouse, but beyond that, you’ll find lush rainforest, heathland, and whale-watching lookouts that make this a must-visit on any Byron Bay itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Cape Byron Lighthouse – Australia’s most easterly lighthouse, perched on a rocky headland with panoramic ocean views. The short walk up is rewarded with photo-worthy vistas and, in season, humpback whales breaching offshore.
- Cape Byron Walking Track – A 3.7 km loop that winds through coastal heath, rainforest, and past secluded beaches like Wategos and Little Wategos. Keep an eye out for sea eagles and wallabies.
- Whale-watching lookouts – From June to November, the headland offers some of the best land-based whale-watching in NSW. Bring binoculars to spot mothers and calves.
- Indigenous cultural heritage – The park is co-managed with the Arakwal people; interpretive signs along the track share stories of the Bundjalung Nation, including shell middens and ceremonial sites.
- Palm Valley – A lush, palm-filled gully near the lighthouse that feels like a tropical oasis, with strangler figs and giant stinging trees.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal to fully experience the park. Start early to avoid crowds (and the heat) – allow 2–3 hours for the walking track, plus extra time to linger at the lighthouse and beaches. If you’re a keen photographer or whale-watcher, a full morning or late afternoon visit is perfect. The park is small enough to combine with a morning in Byron Bay town and an afternoon at nearby beaches.
