Amity Point is a relaxed coastal hamlet on the northern tip of North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah), a short ferry ride from Brisbane. With its uncrowded beaches, gentle surf, and abundant marine life, it’s the perfect escape for travellers seeking a slower pace and a genuine connection to Queensland’s natural environment. The local Quandamooka people have deep ties to this land, and their stories add a rich layer to the landscape.
Highlights & What to See
- Point Lookout & Gorge Walk – A stunning coastal track offering panoramic views, sea caves, and excellent whale-watching from June to November. Keep an eye out for sea eagles and turtles below.
- Amity Point Jetty – A prime spot for fishing and spotting dolphins, which often cruise past at sunset. The jetty is also a favourite for pelican-watching.
- Flinders Beach – A long, quiet stretch of sand ideal for swimming, kayaking, and beachcombing. The calm waters make it family-friendly.
- Brown Lake (Bummiera) – A perched lake stained by tea-tree tannins, perfect for a refreshing dip surrounded by paperbark forest. The water’s dark hue is natural and safe.
- Straddie Brewing Co. – A local craft brewery in Point Lookout serving up cold beers, wood-fired pizzas, and a welcoming vibe – a great spot to refuel after a day outdoors.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors base themselves on North Stradbroke Island for two to three days, which allows you to explore the main sights without rushing. A full day is enough to enjoy Amity Point’s beaches, jetty, and a coastal walk, but add an extra day if you want to hike the Gorge Walk, visit Brown Lake, or take a 4WD tour of the island’s less-accessible beaches. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Brisbane is feasible: catch the early ferry, hire a bike or scooter, and pack a picnic.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Point Lookout – The island’s main hub, with cafes, shops, and the iconic North Gorge Walk. It’s a 15-minute drive from Amity Point.
- Dunwich – The ferry arrival point, home to the Stradbroke Island Museum and a historic pub. Worth a quick stop for local history.
- Moreton Island – A neighbouring sand island accessible by ferry, famous for the Tangalooma Wrecks, sand dunes, and dolphin feeding. Combine with a longer island-hopping itinerary.
- Brisbane – The vibrant capital city is just a 45-minute ferry and drive away, offering urban attractions, dining, and cultural experiences.
- Gold Coast – A 1.5-hour drive south, with theme parks, surf beaches, and nightlife – a classic contrast to the island’s serenity.
