Yamba is a laid-back coastal town at the mouth of the Clarence River, where pristine beaches meet a relaxed surf culture. It’s the kind of place where you ditch your shoes and let the rhythm of the waves set your pace. With a village atmosphere, excellent cafes, and world-class fishing, Yamba is a perfect escape on the NSW North Coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Main Beach and the Yamba Breakwall: A stunning stretch of sand for swimming, sunbaking, and watching the sunset. Walk the breakwall for panoramic views of the river mouth and ocean.
- Angourie Point: A legendary surf break a short drive south, known for its powerful right-hand wave. Even if you don’t surf, the coastal walk and rock pools are spectacular.
- Clarence River: Take a kayak or boat tour to explore the river’s mangrove-lined banks, spot dolphins, and try your hand at fishing for bream and flathead.
- Yamba Lighthouse: A historic lighthouse on the headland offering 360-degree views. It’s a great spot for whale watching during migration season (June–November).
- Yuraygir National Park: A coastal park with walking trails, secluded beaches, and abundant birdlife. The walk from Angourie to Shelley Beach is a must-do.
Suggested Time to Spend
Yamba rewards a slow pace. Spend at least two full days to soak up the beach vibe, explore the national park, and enjoy the local food scene. If you’re short on time, a day trip from the Hunter Valley is possible but you’ll want to stay longer. Combine with a few days in Byron Bay or Coffs Harbour for a classic NSW coastal road trip.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Grafton: A historic river city with Victorian architecture and the famous Jacaranda-lined streets, about 45 minutes inland.
- Iluka: A peaceful fishing village at the opposite side of the Clarence River mouth, accessible by ferry. Great for birdwatching and rainforest walks.
- Byron Bay: About 1.5 hours drive north, Byron offers a more bustling scene with iconic beaches, markets, and hinterland escapes.
- Coffs Harbour: An hour south, known for the Big Banana, Solitary Islands Marine Park, and family-friendly attractions.
- Hunter Valley Wine Region: About 5 hours south, but make it part of a longer itinerary combining wine tasting with coastal relaxation.
