Woolgoolga, affectionately known as 'Woopi' to locals, is a laid-back coastal town on the NSW North Coast, halfway between Coffs Harbour and Grafton. Its main draw is a long, patrolled beach with a rugged headland, but the town's unexpected Sikh heritage—visible in a striking gurdwara and the annual Punjabi festival—adds a unique cultural layer. The hinterland is a patchwork of banana plantations and macadamia orchards, and the local cafés serve up excellent coffee and fresh seafood. It's a perfect stop for a beach break or a slow-paced day on a Sydney-to-Brisbane road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Woolgoolga Beach & Headland – A wide, sandy beach with a flagged swimming area and a coastal walk around the headland offering panoramic views. The headland is also a prime whale-watching spot during migration (June–November).
- Guru Nanak Sikh Temple – One of only a handful of gurdwaras in regional Australia, its golden domes are a striking sight. Visitors are welcome to explore the grounds and learn about the local Sikh community.
- Woolgoolga Lake – A calm, shallow lake perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, and birdwatching. The lake walk is a flat, easy trail through paperbark trees.
- Banana Coast Tourism Centre – Housed in a giant 'Big Banana', this quirky stop offers local produce tastings, a small museum on banana farming, and a fun photo op.
- Woolgoolga Markets – Held on the first Sunday of the month, these markets are great for artisan crafts, local honey, and fresh fruit.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is enough to enjoy the beach, visit the temple, and grab a bite. If you're keen on a longer stay, a full day allows time for a coastal walk, a paddle on the lake, and a relaxed lunch at one of the beachfront cafés. It's an ideal overnight stop for those breaking the Sydney–Brisbane drive.
