Plunging nearly 300 metres into a fern-lined gorge, Wentworth Falls is one of the Blue Mountains' most dramatic and accessible waterfalls. The constant mist nourishes a lush temperate rainforest of tree ferns, sassafras and moss-covered boulders, while lookouts along the escarpment deliver heart-stopping views across the Jamison Valley. This is classic Blue Mountains scenery at its finest — and you don't have to be a hardcore hiker to experience it.
Highlights & What to See
- Wentworth Falls Lookout: An easy 10-minute walk from the carpark delivers a front-row view of the waterfall cascading into the abyss. On sunny afternoons, rainbows often dance in the spray.
- The Grand Cliff Top Walk: This world-class track links Wentworth Falls to Katoomba, hugging the sandstone rim for 10 km. You can tackle a short section (return to the Conservation Hut) for a taste of the views without a full-day commitment.
- Wentworth Falls Lake: A peaceful spot for a picnic or a quick swim after hiking. The lake is ringed by a flat walking track and has a dedicated off-leash dog area.
- Princes Rock Lookout: A short, slightly rougher walk from the main lookout rewards you with a panoramic view of the valley and the falls from a different angle — far fewer crowds, too.
- Charles Darwin Walk: A gentle 2.5 km track along Jamison Creek, named after the naturalist who visited in 1836. It leads to the base of the falls via a series of cascades and pools.
Suggested Time to Spend
If you're short on time, a 30-minute stop at the main lookout is enough to soak in the views and snap photos. For a proper Blue Mountains experience, allow at least half a day: combine the Wentworth Falls Lookout with a short hike on the Grand Cliff Top Walk or the Charles Darwin Walk, then relax with lunch at the Conservation Hut. Hikers wanting to descend to the base of the falls via the National Pass should budget 3–4 hours and come prepared with sturdy shoes and water.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Katoomba: The hub of the Blue Mountains, home to the Three Sisters, Echo Point and the Scenic World cableway. It's a 10-minute drive west and a natural pairing for a full day out.
- Blackheath: Head 15 minutes further west for the spectacular Govetts Leap Lookout and the start of the Grand Canyon walking track. The town also has excellent bakeries and antique stores.
- Blue Mountains National Park: The waterfalls, lookouts and walking trails of Wentworth Falls are part of this vast UNESCO-listed wilderness. Consider extending your trip to explore other sections like the Grose Valley or the Glenbrook area.
