Weereewa Lookout
Perched on the edge of the Brokenback Range, Weereewa Lookout delivers one of the most arresting panoramas in the Hunter Valley. From this rocky vantage point, you gaze over the patchwork of vineyards, the meandering Hunter River, and the distant blue smudge of the Barrington Tops. The name 'Weereewa' is an Indigenous term for the wedge-tailed eagle, and it’s easy to imagine these birds riding the thermals above the valley floor. This is a must-stop for anyone wanting to grasp the sheer scale and beauty of Australia’s oldest wine region.
Highlights & What to See
- The Viewing Platform: A short, steep path leads to a fenced platform that feels like the prow of a ship. On clear days, you can see the entire Hunter Valley laid out below.
- Sunset Spectacle: Come late afternoon when the light turns golden and the shadows lengthen across the vineyards. Bring a picnic and watch the sky change colour.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for wedge-tailed eagles, peregrine falcons, and ravens riding the updrafts. The lookout is a prime spot for raptor observation.
- Photography Opportunities: The panoramic vista is a dream for photographers, especially with a telephoto lens to capture the checkerboard of vines.
- Nearby Wineries: The lookout is close to several cellar doors, including those in the Pokolbin area. Combine a visit with a tasting at Brokenwood Wines or Audrey Wilkinson.
Suggested Time to Spend
Budget about 20–30 minutes at the lookout itself, but allow an extra hour if you’re planning to walk the short track or simply sit and absorb the view. It’s an ideal 15-minute detour from the main wine-tasting route, so slot it in between cellar-door visits. For photographers, a sunset visit will demand at least 45 minutes to catch the changing light.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Pokolbin: The heart of Hunter Valley wine country, with dozens of cellar doors, restaurants, and accommodation options just a 10-minute drive away.
- Cessnock: The main service town, offering supermarkets, cafes, and the Hunter Valley Visitor Information Centre.
- Hunter Valley Gardens: A sprawling botanical garden with themed displays, a shopping village, and a playground – great for families.
- Broke: A quieter wine sub-region with boutique wineries and the scenic Brokenback Range backdrop.
- Wollombi: A historic village with a charming pub and the famous Dr. Jurd’s Jungle juice – a quirky stop on the way to or from the lookout.
