Sheltered by Cape Byron’s rocky headland, Wategos Beach is a crescent of golden sand that feels a world away from Byron Bay’s bustling main strip. The turquoise water is calm enough for a leisurely paddle, while the subtropical vegetation creeping down to the shore gives it a wild, tropical edge. This is where locals come to escape the crowds, and you’ll quickly see why.
Highlights & What to See
- Cape Byron Walking Track – The clifftop path from the lighthouse descends to Wategos, offering knockout views of the beach and the Pacific. Do it at sunrise for the full effect.
- Swimming and Snorkelling – Protected from the prevailing winds, the water here is glassy and clear. Bring a mask and you might spot sea turtles and colourful fish around the rocky edges.
- Little Wategos Beach – A tiny, clothing-optional cove just around the headland, accessible via a short rock-hop at low tide. It’s the ultimate hideaway.
- The Pass – Byron’s best surf break is a 10-minute walk south. Even if you don’t surf, it’s a mesmerising spot to watch longboarders glide across perfect green waves.
- Picnic on the Grass – The grassy park behind the beach is dotted with picnic tables and barbecues. Grab fish and chips from the nearby shop and settle in for a lazy afternoon.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal: arrive early to claim a patch of sand, swim in the morning light, then walk up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse (about 30 minutes each way) for panoramic views. If you’re a keen snorkeller or surfer, you could easily spend a full day here, punctuated by a picnic lunch and a gelato from the kiosk. Avoid peak summer weekends if you want space – the car park fills fast.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Byron Bay Town Centre – Just a 5-minute drive away, with its buzzy cafes, boutiques and the iconic Byron Bay Lighthouse.
