Wangaratta, a vibrant city on the banks of the Ovens and King rivers in Victoria's High Country, is a gateway to some of Australia's finest wine regions and alpine adventures. While it’s not in the Hunter Valley, Wangaratta offers a distinctly different landscape of rolling vineyards, national parks, and historic gold rush towns. The city itself charms with its heritage architecture, thriving arts scene, and excellent local produce. Whether you're sipping cool-climate wines, exploring the nearby mountains, or delving into Indigenous culture along the Bangerang Cultural Trail, Wangaratta rewards those who linger.
Highlights & What to See
- Milawa Gourmet Region: A short drive west, Milawa is a food lover's dream with artisan cheesemakers (Milawa Cheese Company), olive groves, and the iconic Brown Brothers winery. Don't miss the Milawa Mustard Shop for unique condiments.
- Warby-Ovens National Park: Just south of town, this park offers dramatic granite outcrops, scenic walking trails (like the Mount Warby Lookout walk), and excellent birdwatching. The wildflowers in spring are spectacular.
- Bangerang Cultural Centre: Learn about the local Bangerang people through engaging exhibits, artefacts, and a bush tucker garden. It's a wonderful introduction to the region's Indigenous heritage.
- Wangaratta Art Gallery: Housed in a former bank building, this gallery showcases contemporary Australian works with a focus on regional artists. The exhibitions change regularly and are always thought-provoking.
- King Valley Prosecco Road: A scenic drive through the King Valley, dotted with cellar doors specialising in prosecco, pinot grigio, and other Italian varietals. Highlights include Pizzini Wines and Dal Zotto Wines.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal for Wangaratta and its surrounds. Use Day 1 to explore the city's cultural sites and the Milawa Gourmet Region. On Day 2, head into the King Valley for a wine tour or hike in Warby-Ovens National Park. A third day allows for deeper exploration of the High Country, such as a drive to Mount Buffalo National Park for stunning alpine views. The area is best visited in autumn (March–May) for the harvest and golden foliage, or spring (September–November) for mild weather and wildflowers.
