Beechworth is a beautifully preserved gold-rush town in Victoria’s High Country, about three hours northeast of Melbourne. Its tree-lined streets are flanked by 19th-century granite buildings, and the whole place hums with a quiet, historic charm. Think old-school bakeries, craft breweries, and a palpable sense of the 1850s gold era. It’s the kind of town where you want to linger over a long lunch and then wander into a museum or two.
Highlights & What to See
- Historic Beechworth Gaol – A formidable bluestone prison where Ned Kelly was once held. The guided tours are gripping, and you can even spend a night in a cell if you’re brave.
- Beechworth Honey & Experience – This is the home of one of Australia’s most famous honey producers. Taste dozens of honey varieties and watch bees at work behind glass.
- Bridal Veil Falls – A short, scenic walk from town leads to this cascading waterfall, perfect for a cool dip on a hot day.
- Burke Museum – A quirky, old-school museum packed with Aboriginal artefacts, gold-rush relics, and a fascinating collection of taxidermy. It’s wonderfully old-fashioned.
- Lake Sambell – A calm, tree-fringed lake just a few minutes’ walk from the main street. Great for a paddle, a picnic, or a gentle stroll.
- Beechworth Bakery – An institution. Try the famous ‘Ned Kelly’ pie or a vanilla slice – they’re legendary.
Suggested Time to Spend
Beechworth rewards a slow pace. A full day is enough to see the main sights – the gaol, the bakery, a museum, and a walk to the falls – but staying one or two nights lets you soak up the evening atmosphere, enjoy a meal at a historic pub, and explore the surrounding national parks at leisure. If you’re on a road trip, it makes a perfect overnight stop between Melbourne and the Snowy Mountains.
