Tweed Valley Hinterland

Rolling green hills, ancient volcanic plugs, and a patchwork of macadamia orchards and dairy farms define the Tweed Valley Hinterland, a serene counterpoint to the nearby Gold Coast bustle. This is where subtropical rainforest meets farmland, and where the caldera of an extinct volcano – the eroded Mount Warning – dominates the skyline. The hinterland rewards slow exploration: winding country roads, farm-gate stalls, and walking trails that lead to sweeping views over the valley and out to the Pacific.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Two to three days is ideal to soak up the hinterland’s atmosphere. Spend the first day exploring Murwillumbah and the Tweed River, then tackle an early morning Mount Warning hike on day two. Use the third day to explore the national parks and scenic drives – or simply relax with a farm tour. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Byron Bay or the Gold Coast can cover the highlights, but you’ll want to linger longer.
