Rolling green hills, ancient volcanic plugs, and a patchwork of macadamia orchards and dairy farms define the Tweed Valley Hinterland, a serene counterpoint to the nearby Gold Coast bustle. This is where subtropical rainforest meets farmland, and where the caldera of an extinct volcano – the eroded Mount Warning – dominates the skyline. The hinterland rewards slow exploration: winding country roads, farm-gate stalls, and walking trails that lead to sweeping views over the valley and out to the Pacific.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Warning (Wollumbin) – A sunrise hike up this ancient volcano is a rite of passage; the summit offers the first place in mainland Australia to see the sun rise. The 4.4 km trail is steep but well-maintained, with rainforest sections and panoramic views at the top.
- Border Ranges National Park – One of the most biodiverse areas in Australia, this World Heritage-listed park features towering Antarctic beech trees, subtropical rainforest, and lookouts like Pinnacle Lookout with views over the caldera rim.
- Uki – A charming village with a community feel, known for its Saturday markets, art galleries, and the Uki Pub – a great spot for a cold beer on the verandah.
- Mount Warning Rainforest Park – Just outside Murwillumbah, this park offers easy walks through lush rainforest and a chance to spot pademelons and brush turkeys.
- Farm gates & producers – The hinterland is dotted with small farms selling macadamias, avocados, and tropical fruit. Check out the Tweed Valley Macadamias shop and the many roadside stalls.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days is ideal to soak up the hinterland’s atmosphere. Spend the first day exploring Murwillumbah and the Tweed River, then tackle an early morning Mount Warning hike on day two. Use the third day to explore the national parks and scenic drives – or simply relax with a farm tour. If you’re short on time, a day trip from Byron Bay or the Gold Coast can cover the highlights, but you’ll want to linger longer.
