Just an hour north of Sydney, The Entrance is a classic Central Coast beach town where a narrow channel spills Tuggerah Lake into the Tasman Sea. It’s a place of long, sandy beaches, a lively waterfront, and the daily spectacle of pelicans being fed – a ritual that has drawn families for decades. With a relaxed, holiday vibe and an easygoing café scene, it’s a perfect stop on a drive up the coast or a base for exploring the wider Hunter region.
Highlights & What to See
- Pelican Feeding at Memorial Park – Every afternoon at 3:30pm, the resident pelicans gather on the waterfront for a free feeding session. It’s a cheesy but genuinely charming tradition that kids love.
- The Entrance Ocean Baths – A protected, netted swimming area right on the beach, ideal for a safe dip. The adjacent surf beach is patrolled in summer.
- Long Jetty – A short drive north, this historic timber jetty stretches into Tuggerah Lake, offering a classic photo op and a peaceful spot for fishing or sunset watching.
- Wyrrabalong National Park – Just south of town, this coastal bushland has walking trails through littoral rainforest and along dramatic sea cliffs. Look out for whales during migration (June–July, September–November).
- Norah Head Lighthouse – A 1903 lighthouse with guided tours and sweeping views from the top. The surrounding rock platform is great for a coastal walk.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can easily fill a day with a morning beach walk, pelican feeding, and a pub lunch on the water. If you’re keen on the national park and lighthouse, add another half-day. Most visitors use The Entrance as a stopover en route to Newcastle or the Hunter Valley – a two-night stay lets you soak up the relaxed pace without rushing.
