Tamborine Mountain is a lush, mist-wrapped plateau in the Gold Coast hinterland, offering a cool escape into ancient rainforest, artisan villages, and sweeping valley views. This is where Queensland’s subtropical greenery meets a creative community of winemakers, potters, and fudge-makers — perfect for a day trip or a relaxed overnight stay.
Highlights & What to See
- Tamborine Mountain National Park – walk the rainforest canopy on the 300-metre-long Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk, or take the easy Curtis Falls track to a cascading waterfall and rock pool.
- Gallery Walk – the main street of North Tamborine is lined with boutique galleries, craft shops, and cafés; stop for homemade fudge or a coffee at one of the many verandah-fronted spots.
- Wineries & Distilleries – the mountain’s cool climate produces excellent wines; visit Cedar Creek Estate or Witches Falls Winery for tastings, and don’t miss the Tamborine Mountain Distillery for handcrafted liqueurs.
- Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens – 28 hectares of themed gardens, including a Japanese garden, a rose garden, and a rainforest walk, all free to explore.
- Glow Worm Caves – join a guided tour at the Cedar Creek Estate glow worm cave to see the bioluminescent larvae in their natural habitat.
- Hang Gliding & Paragliding – for adventurous travellers, the mountain’s eastern escarpment is a launch site for tandem flights over the Gold Coast.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors can cover the main sights in a full day, but stay overnight to truly soak in the mountain’s relaxed atmosphere. A weekend allows time for a winery tour, a rainforest walk, and a leisurely browse of the Gallery Walk. If you’re short on time, a half-day focused on the Skywalk and one winery is still rewarding.
