Plunging 84 metres through a sheer basalt cliff, Steavenson Falls is one of Victoria's most spectacular waterfalls, yet it remains refreshingly under-visited. Located in the tall forests of the Marysville region, the falls are a short walk from the car park and are floodlit at night, creating a magical atmosphere. The constant mist and roar of water make this a sensory highlight of any trip through the central highlands.
Highlights & What to See
- The Main Viewing Platform – An easy 200-metre walk leads to a platform that offers a direct, face-on view of the full cascade. On sunny mornings, look for rainbows dancing in the spray.
- Night Illumination – The falls are lit until late evening (check current times), transforming the scene into a dreamlike spectacle of illuminated water against the dark forest.
- Steavenson River Walk – A gentle 1.5-km loop trail follows the river upstream from the falls, passing through towering mountain ash and fern gullies. Keep an eye out for lyrebirds and wallabies.
- Marysville Town – Just 3 km away, this charming town was rebuilt after the 2009 bushfires and now offers cosy cafes, art galleries, and the excellent Marysville Trout and Salmon Farm.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, which is enough for the viewing platform, the river walk, and a picnic. If you plan to combine the falls with a meal or a stroll around Marysville, budget half a day. The falls are at their most dramatic after rain, but the walk is short enough to enjoy even in wet weather.
