Hidden in the lush rainforest of the Bouddi National Park, Somersby Falls is a serene cascade that rewards travellers with a cool, misty escape just a short drive from the Central Coast. The falls tumble over sandstone ledges into a series of plunge pools, surrounded by towering gum trees and the calls of lyrebirds. It’s a favourite for picnickers, bushwalkers, and anyone craving a quick dose of nature without a long hike.
Highlights & What to See
- Upper Falls lookout – An easy 100-metre walk from the carpark leads to a viewing platform with a direct face-on view of the main cascade.
- Lower Falls swimming hole – A short but steep track descends to a deep, clear pool perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot day (the water is bracing even in summer).
- Rainforest boardwalk – A loop trail through ancient cycads, tree ferns and mossy boulders, with interpretive signs about the local ecology.
- Picnic areas – Sheltered tables and barbecues near the carpark make this an ideal spot for a lunch stop between Hunter Valley wineries.
- Birdwatching – Keep an eye out for satin bowerbirds, yellow-tailed black cockatoos and the occasional lyrebird scratching through leaf litter.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here: 15 minutes to admire the upper falls, 30–40 minutes for the rainforest loop, and another 20 minutes if you brave the steep track down to the lower pool. If you plan to swim or have a leisurely picnic, allow up to half a day. The falls are best visited in the morning when the light filters through the canopy and before the crowds arrive.
