Perched on a dramatic headland within Hat Head National Park on the Mid North Coast, Smoky Cape Lighthouse is one of Australia’s most photogenic lighthouse stations. Completed in 1891, this working lighthouse offers sweeping coastal views, a glimpse into maritime history, and a peaceful escape into nature. The surrounding park is a haven for walkers and wildlife-spotters, with the lighthouse acting as both a landmark and a vantage point for whale watching (May–November).

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allocate at least 1.5–2 hours to explore the lighthouse precinct, walk the coastal track, and soak up the views. If you’re staying overnight in one of the cottages or combining it with a day in Hat Head National Park, plan for a half-day. The lighthouse is best visited in the morning for soft light and fewer crowds, but late afternoon brings golden hues perfect for photography.
