Stretching 45 kilometres through the rugged Blue Mountains wilderness, the Six Foot Track is a multi-day hiking trail that follows an old coach road built in the 1880s to connect Katoomba with the Jenolan Caves. This is not a gentle stroll — the track demands fitness and preparation, but rewards with dramatic escarpment views, eucalypt forests, river crossings, and a genuine sense of remoteness just a few hours from Sydney. For international travellers, it’s a chance to experience Australia’s bush country at its most immersive, with campfire nights under star-filled skies.
Highlights & What to See
- Start at the Explorers Tree – This historic landmark in Katoomba marks the beginning of the track and pays tribute to the early European explorers of the Blue Mountains.
- Megalong Valley lookout – Early on, you’ll be treated to sweeping views across the Megalong Valley, a patchwork of farmland and wild bush that glows gold at sunset.
- Coxs River crossing – A thigh-deep ford (check conditions) that feels like a rite of passage; the river is crystal clear and perfect for a cooling dip.
- Bowtells Swing Bridge – A charming suspension bridge over the Coxs River, built to replace an old ford and offering a fun, swaying crossing.
- Black Range Campground – The only designated camping area along the track, set in a peaceful clearing with basic facilities and a communal fire pit.
- Jenolan Caves finish – The trail ends at the world-famous Jenolan Caves, where you can reward your efforts with a guided tour of the limestone chambers and a hot meal at the historic Caves House.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most hikers complete the Six Foot Track in three days and two nights, walking roughly 15 km per day. This allows a comfortable pace with time to swim, take photos, and set up camp well before dark. Fit hikers can knock it out in two days, but that means longer, harder days and less time to soak in the scenery. Plan to start early from Katoomba and book a transfer back from Jenolan Caves — or arrange a car shuffle if you have your own vehicle.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
