Fancy a splash of bubblegum pink in your Hunter Valley itinerary? The Pink Lakes, also known as the Stockton Sand Dunes Pink Lakes, are a surreal natural phenomenon where shallow salt lakes take on a rosy hue thanks to algae and high salinity. Tucked behind the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes, these ephemeral lakes are best visited after rain, when the water level is just right and the colour is most vivid. It’s a photographer’s dream and a quirky detour from the valley’s wine trail.
Highlights & What to See
- Pink Lake (the main one): The most accessible lake, often a vivid pink from spring to autumn. Walk along the crunchy salt-encrusted edge and snap that perfect reflection shot.
- Stockton Bight Sand Dunes: The backdrop of towering white sand dunes is an adventure in itself. Try sandboarding or a 4WD tour to reach more remote lakes.
- Birdwatching: Keep an eye out for black swans, pelicans, and migratory waders that frequent the lakes and surrounding wetlands.
- Sunset colours: As the sun dips, the pink intensifies, contrasting with the golden dunes – a magical time to visit.
- Nearby Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters: A hands-on aquarium experience just a short drive away, perfect for families.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours at the Pink Lakes, including a walk around the main lake and time for photos. If you’re combining it with sandboarding or a 4WD dune tour, budget half a day. The lakes are best visited in the late afternoon for soft light and fewer crowds. Sunrise is also lovely but can be chilly.
