Perisher is Australia's largest ski resort, sprawling across four interconnected villages in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales. With reliable snow, extensive terrain, and a lively après-ski scene, it's a mecca for winter sports enthusiasts. But beyond the slopes, the area offers stunning alpine scenery, wildlife spotting, and year-round adventure.
Highlights & What to See
- Ski & Snowboard Terrain: Over 1,200 hectares of skiable terrain across Perisher Valley, Blue Cow, Smiggin Holes, and Guthega – suited for beginners to experts. The Front Valley is perfect for learners, while the Backcountry offers challenging runs.
- Perisher Blue Cow Mountain: Take the Skitube Alpine Railway to Blue Cow for panoramic views and high-altitude runs. The summit provides 360-degree vistas of the Main Range.
- Snow Play & Tobogganing: Dedicated snow play areas for families, including tubing and tobogganing at Smiggin Holes.
- Cross-Country Skiing: Extensive groomed trails at Perisher Nordic Ski Centre, winding through snow gums and open plains.
- Wildlife Encounters: Keep an eye out for snow gum forests, and native animals like the mountain pygmy possum and the corroboree frog (with luck).
- Après-Ski Dining: The Man from Snowy River Hotel and the Sundeck Restaurant offer hearty meals and live music, while the Jax Bar is a local favourite for drinks.
Suggested Time to Spend
For a comprehensive experience, plan at least 3–4 days. This allows you to explore the four resort areas, take lessons if needed, and enjoy a day of cross-country or backcountry skiing. A weekend can work for a quick hit, but you'll miss the variety. In summer (December to March), a day trip is enough for hiking and sightseeing, though overnight stays let you appreciate the alpine serenity.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Thredbo: A neighbouring ski resort with a vibrant village, summer bobsled, and chairlift rides.
