Deep in the West MacDonnell Ranges, Ormiston Gorge and Pound is a stunning natural amphitheatre of red rock cliffs and ghost gums, where a permanent waterhole offers the perfect spot for a swim after a hike. This is one of the Northern Territory's most iconic outback experiences, easily accessible from Alice Springs and ideal for travellers seeking dramatic landscapes and genuine bushwalking.
Highlights & What to See
- Ormiston Pound Walk: A 7.5 km loop that climbs to a lookout over the pound's vast bowl, then descends through the gorge to the waterhole. Allow 3–4 hours for this rewarding hike.
- Ghomm Pass Walk: A shorter 2.5 km route through a narrow chasm (the pass) to the waterhole – great for a quick adventure with big scenery.
- Swimming at the waterhole: Year-round water (though coldest in winter) surrounded by towering cliffs – a sublime spot for a cool dip after walking.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for black-footed rock-wallabies, birds of prey, and, after rain, wildflowers carpeting the spinifex.
- Sunset views: The gorge walls glow fiery orange as the sun drops – bring a camera and a picnic.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least half a day (4–5 hours) to do the full Pound Walk and enjoy a swim. If you're short on time, the Ghomm Pass Walk plus a swim can be done in 2 hours. Many visitors combine Ormiston with nearby gorges for a full day of exploring the West MacDonnell Ranges. The best time to visit is in the cooler months (April to September); summer days are intensely hot – start early.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Alice Springs: The gateway town, 135 km east, with the Royal Flying Doctor Service museum and the School of the Air.
- Standley Chasm: A narrow, sheer-walled chasm just 50 km from Alice, best photographed at midday when sunlight hits the floor.
- Simpsons Gap: A scenic gap with a permanent waterhole and a short walk – great for a quick stop.
- Ellery Creek Big Hole: Another popular swimming spot with a large waterhole and a 3 km loop walk.
- Glen Helen Gorge: The westernmost of the West MacDonnell gorges, with a tranquil waterhole and a historic homestead.
