Oodnadatta might be a speck on the map in South Australia's far north, but it punches well above its weight in outback character. This historic rail and roadhouse town on the traditional lands of the Arabana people is the gateway to the iconic Oodnadatta Track. Expect red dirt, endless blue skies, and a genuine frontier atmosphere that draws travellers seeking the real Australian outback.

Most travellers pass through on a 2–3 day self-drive along the Oodnadatta Track, but budget at least a full day to soak up the atmosphere, chat with locals at the roadhouse, and explore nearby historic sites. If you're continuing north to Coober Pedy or south to the Flinders Ranges, factor in an extra day for detours to Lake Eyre and the William Creek pub.
