Nightcap National Park, a lush subtropical rainforest in the hinterland of the New South Wales north coast, is a sanctuary of ancient trees, cascading waterfalls, and rich wildlife. Part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, this park offers a serene escape for hikers and nature lovers, with trails that wind through towering palms, fig trees, and fern-filled gullies. It's a place where the air feels cooler and the sounds of birds and water dominate.
Highlights & What to See
- Protesters Falls: A stunning 20-metre waterfall that plunges into a deep pool, named after the 1970s protests that saved this forest from logging. It's the centrepiece of the park and a perfect photo stop.
- Big Scrub Loop: An easy 2.2 km walk through magnificent remnants of the Big Scrub, the largest subtropical rainforest in Australia, with towering red cedar and booyong trees.
- Nightcap Lookout: A short drive and walk to a viewpoint offering sweeping vistas over the Tweed Valley and Wollumbin (Mount Warning). Great for sunrise or sunset.
- Minyon Falls: A spectacular 100-metre drop accessible via a steep but rewarding walk (partly within nearby Border Ranges National Park). The viewing platform gives a dizzying perspective.
- Birdwatching and Wildlife: Look for the elusive Albert's lyrebird, wompoo fruit-dove, and if you're lucky, the endangered long-nosed potoroo. Keep an eye out for goannas and pademelons.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day exploring the main highlights, such as the Protester Falls circuit and a lookout stop. For a deeper experience, dedicate a full day to tackle the longer Minyon Falls walk or the Big Scrub Loop combined with a picnic. The park is best visited in the morning to avoid afternoon rain showers, which are common in this rainforest environment.
