Perched on the stunning mid-north coast of New South Wales, Nambucca Heads is a laidback seaside town that blends dramatic headlands, pristine beaches, and a rich Indigenous and maritime history. The town’s name comes from the local Gumbaynggirr word for ‘bend in the river’, and the Nambucca River is the lifeblood of the area, offering calm waterways to explore alongside wild ocean swells. With its friendly community, excellent surf breaks, and easygoing vibe, Nambucca Heads is a perfect stop on a coastal road trip between Sydney and Brisbane.
Highlights & What to See
- V-Wall (Nambucca Heads Breakwall) – A vibrant outdoor gallery where locals and visitors paint colourful murals on the massive concrete blocks protecting the river mouth. Take a leisurely stroll, watch fishermen cast their lines, and spot dolphins playing in the estuary.
- Shelly Beach – A sheltered, patrolled beach ideal for swimming, snorkelling, and picnicking. The adjacent headland offers panoramic views of the coast and is a prime whale-watching spot from June to November.
- Captain Cook Lookout – Perched high on the headland, this lookout provides sweeping vistas of the coastline, the river, and the ocean. It’s a fantastic spot for sunrise photography and spotting migrating humpbacks.
- Nambucca River & Islands – Hire a kayak, paddleboard, or boat to explore the tranquil river and its mangrove-fringed islands. The river is also great for crabbing and fishing, with several public jetties.
- Nambucca Heads Historic Museum – Housed in a former railway station, this small museum offers insights into the area’s logging, shipping, and Indigenous heritage.
Suggested Time to Spend

If you’re passing through on a road trip, an overnight stop allows you to enjoy a sunset walk along the V-Wall and a morning swim at Shelly Beach.
