Rising like a green whaleback from the cobalt waters off Coffs Harbour, Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve is a spectacular headland-turned-island that offers one of the most accessible wildlife encounters on the New South Wales coast. Connected to the mainland by a narrow breakwater, this protected reserve is a crucial nesting site for wedge-tailed shearwaters (muttonbirds), which arrive each spring to burrow into the soft soil. The island’s elevated walking track delivers sweeping views of the Solitary Islands Marine Park, the harbour, and the rainforest-clad mountains beyond — a perfect blend of coastal drama and natural history.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour for the walk and wildlife viewing. For the best experience, time your visit for late afternoon (around 4–5 pm) when the shearwaters return to their burrows and the light softens over the ocean. Combine with a morning or afternoon in Coffs Harbour itself — the jetty precinct and the Botanic Garden are just a short drive away.
