Mount Donna Buang, rising 1250 metres in the Yarra Ranges, is a cool-climate escape beloved by Melburnians for its ferny rainforest, snow in winter, and panoramic views from the summit tower. This is the closest snow play destination to Melbourne, but outside winter it’s a serene bushwalking haven with towering mountain ash and tree ferns.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Lookout Tower: Climb the spiral stairs for 360-degree views over the Yarra Valley, the Dandenongs, and on clear days, the Melbourne skyline and Port Phillip Bay.
- Rainforest Walks: The gentle 1.2 km Rainforest Circuit leads through towering myrtle beech and tree ferns – an atmospheric, mossy stroll that feels prehistoric.
- Cement Creek Treetop Walk: A short boardwalk through the canopy of towering mountain ash, offering a bird’s-eye view of the forest floor.
- Snow Play (June–August): The summit area becomes a winter playground for tobogganing and snowball fights – bring a sled and warm layers.
- Mount Donna Buang Road: A scenic drive through tall forests and fern gullies, with several picnic spots and lookout points en route.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is sufficient to drive up, do the Rainforest Circuit, climb the lookout tower, and enjoy a picnic. If you want to walk longer trails like the 10 km Donna Buang to Mount Victoria walk, allow a full day. In winter, factor in extra time for slow driving and snow play – it can get busy on weekends.
