Straddling the Murray River where New South Wales meets Victoria, the twin towns of Koondrook and Barham offer a classic riverine escape that feels a world away from the coast. On the NSW side, Barham is the larger of the two, with a broad main street and a relaxed, rural charm, while Koondrook, across the bridge in Victoria, is quieter and more historic. Together they form a perfect base for exploring the lower Murray wetlands, fishing, and soaking up slow-paced river life.
Highlights & What to See
- Murray River & River Red Gums: The star attraction is the river itself. Hire a canoe, kayak or houseboat, or simply stroll along the banks beneath towering river red gums. The Koondrook State Forest protects magnificent old-growth red gums that are among the largest in the state.
- Barham Picnic Reserve & Swimming Beach: A shady riverside park with a sandy beach, perfect for a summer dip. There are free electric barbecues and a playground, making it ideal for families.
- Koondrook Wharf & Historic Buildings: The old wooden wharf is a lovely spot to watch paddle steamers (the historic PS Emmylou often moors here). Wander Koondrook's main street to see heritage-listed hotels and the charming Koondrook Post Office.
- Fishing: The Murray is famed for Murray cod, golden perch and silver perch. Drop a line from the bank or book a guided fishing charter. The river is also a hotspot for yabbying in summer.
- Pioneer Park & Museum (Barham): A small but engaging museum housed in an old flour mill, with exhibits on local Aboriginal culture, paddle steamers and agricultural history.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors find two to three days ideal. Spend the first day exploring the towns and the river on foot or by boat, then dedicate a second day to a self-drive loop through the surrounding forests and wetlands. If you have a third day, consider a houseboat hire or a longer paddle trip. The pace here is unhurried — allow time for lazy afternoons by the water.
