When the Australian summer heat gives way to the festive season, the Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights transform the already beautiful gardens into a twinkling winter wonderland. This annual event, running from early November to late January, is one of the country's most spectacular Christmas light displays, with over two million lights illuminating the 14-hectare gardens. It's a magical experience for families, couples, and solo travellers alike, offering a distinctly Australian take on Christmas celebrations.
Highlights & What to See
- Storybook-themed light displays: Wander through zones inspired by classic tales like Alice in Wonderland, The Twelve Days of Christmas, and a whimsical Candy Cane Lane, all brought to life with thousands of twinkling lights and animated figures.
- Santa's House and Grotto: Meet Santa himself in his beautifully decorated grotto – a hit with kids and a perfect photo opportunity. The elves are on hand to spread cheer and festive treats.
- Christmas market and food stalls: The event features a bustling market with local artisans, plus food trucks and stalls serving everything from mulled wine to roast chestnuts. Grab a glass of local Hunter Valley wine or a gourmet pie to enjoy as you stroll.
- Live entertainment and carols: Catch nightly performances from local choirs and musicians singing classic Christmas carols under the stars. Check the schedule for special appearances and fireworks nights.
- Garden of Lights and Reflection Lake: The centrepiece is a spectacular light show over the lake, with synchronised music and dancing fountains. Find a spot on the grass and soak it all in.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend between two and three hours exploring the light displays, enjoying the market, and catching a performance. If you want to fully immerse yourself, arrive just before sunset (around 7:30 pm in summer) to see the gardens transition from day to night. The event is open from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm nightly, so you can easily combine it with a day of wine tasting in the Hunter Valley before heading to the lights.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
