Hat Head is a quiet coastal hamlet on the NSW Mid North Coast, where a dramatic headland curls around a pristine beach and the Hat Head National Park stretches south. This is a place for pure, unadulterated nature — think empty surf breaks, walking trails through coastal heath, and a relaxed fishing-village vibe that feels a world away from the nearby holiday hubs.
Highlights & What to See
- Hat Head Beach — a long, sweeping arc of golden sand that’s perfect for swimming, surfing, or simply walking with the waves. The southern end is patrolled in summer, but the whole beach feels wonderfully uncrowded.
- Hat Head National Park — explore the coastal heath and paperbark swamps on the Goolawah Loop Walk (4 km, easy) or the longer Smoky Cape Walk (11 km one-way) which hugs cliffs and offers whale-watching vantage points from June to November.
- Korogoro Point Lookout — a short drive or walk from the village, this lookout delivers sweeping views over the headland, the beach, and the ocean. It’s a prime spot for sunrise or a picnic.
- Hat Head Fishing — the village is a working fishing community, and you can buy fresh catch straight off the boats. The breakwall and beach are popular for beach fishing, or launch a kayak in the Korogoro Creek.
- Hat Head Village — a charming cluster of fibro cottages, a general store, and a pub that feels like stepping back in time. Grab a coffee and a pie, and chat with the locals.
Suggested Time to Spend
Hat Head is best as a half-day stop or a relaxed overnight stay. If you’re just passing through, two hours is enough to walk the beach, see the lookout, and grab a bite. To properly explore the national park and do a longer walk, budget four hours. For a true escape, spend a night at the caravan park or one of the holiday rentals — you’ll have the beach almost to yourself at sunset.
