Hidden in the rolling green hills of the Hunter Valley, Gostwyck Chapel is a tiny Gothic Revival gem that feels like a secret from another century. Built in 1834, this sandstone chapel was designed by the convict architect John Verge for the Dangar family, who owned the vast Gostwyck estate. Surrounded by sheep-dotted paddocks and ancient trees, it’s a place of serene beauty and quiet history – a perfect detour for travellers seeking a glimpse of early colonial life.
Highlights & What to See
- Gostwyck Chapel – Wander inside the chapel to admire its simple yet elegant interior: timber pews, a stone altar, and beautifully preserved stained-glass windows that cast jewel-toned light across the walls.
- Gostwyck Homestead – The nearby homestead (not open to the public) is a fine example of Georgian architecture, but you can appreciate its graceful facade from the road.
- Gostwyck Bridge – A short walk from the chapel, this convict-built stone bridge spans the Page River and is one of the oldest surviving bridges in Australia.
- Scenic Countryside – The drive to the chapel winds through lush pastures, with grazing cattle and the distant Brokenback Range as a backdrop – keep your camera ready.
Suggested Time to Spend
Set aside about 30 minutes to an hour. The chapel itself is small, so you can easily explore the interior, stroll the grounds, and walk to the bridge in under an hour. Pair it with a tasting at a nearby winery or a visit to one of the valley’s historic villages to make a leisurely half-day loop.
