Gippsland Plains Rail Trail
Meandering through the lush dairy country of Gippsland, the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail is a 130-kilometre multi-use path that follows the route of the old Gippsland railway line. This flat, well-maintained trail is a delight for cyclists, walkers and horse riders, offering a peaceful journey through farmland, forests and small historic towns. The trail is divided into four sections, each with its own character, and is a fantastic way to experience the region's natural beauty and rural heritage at a leisurely pace.
Highlights & What to See
- Stratford to Maffra – The most popular section, winding through river flats and past the historic swing bridge over the Avon River. Keep an eye out for platypuses in the river.
- Maffra to Heyfield – A gentle ride through dairy pastures and shady gullies, with the old Maffra railway station (now a museum) a worthwhile stop.
- Briagolong to Munro – A more remote stretch through forest and farmland, ideal for spotting kangaroos and birdlife. The Munro station site offers picnic tables.
- Sale to Stratford – The southernmost section, passing through the town of Sale with its lake and wetlands, and the historic Port of Sale precinct.
- Wildlife and wildflowers – Spring brings carpets of wildflowers, and the trail is a haven for birdwatchers, with species like the superb fairy-wren and eastern rosella.
Suggested Time to Spend
To fully appreciate the trail, allow at least two to three days to cycle the entire route, breaking it into manageable 30–40 km daily segments. If you only have a day, the Stratford–Maffra section (22 km one way) is the most scenic and rewarding. Walkers can tackle shorter stretches, with plenty of interpretive signs explaining the railway history. The trail is well-signed and mostly flat, making it suitable for families and casual riders.
