Stretching south of Adelaide, the Fleurieu Peninsula is a sun-drenched escape of rolling vineyards, dramatic coastlines, and laid-back seaside villages. This is South Australia’s weekend playground, where you can taste world-class cool-climate wines, swim at pristine beaches, and spot kangaroos on wild headlands. The peninsula’s easygoing rhythm and stunning scenery make it a perfect detour for any traveller exploring the region.
Highlights & What to See
- McLaren Vale wine region – Taste shiraz and grenache at cellar doors with views over gnarled old vines. Don’t miss d’Arenberg’s quirky cube building.
- Victor Harbor – Ride the horse-drawn tram to Granite Island, home to a colony of little penguins. The coastal walk from the Bluff is superb.
- Deep Creek Conservation Park – Hike the Deep Creek Waterfall Walk or the Heysen Trail along dramatic sea cliffs. Look for echidnas and western grey kangaroos.
- Port Elliot & Middleton – Two of the state’s best surfing beaches, with gentle waves for learners and consistent breaks for pros. Grab fish and chips at Port Elliot Bakery.
- Goolwa & the Coorong – Explore the historic river port, take a cruise on the Coorong’s lagoons, and spot pelicans and black swans.
- Rapid Bay – Snorkel with leafy seadragons in the calm bay; the jetty is a renowned dive site.
Suggested Time to Spend
Three to four days lets you sample the peninsula’s highlights without rushing. Base yourself in McLaren Vale for two nights to explore vineyards and the coast, then move to Victor Harbor or Port Elliot for a night. A day each for wine tasting, coastal walks, and beach time is ideal. If you’re short on time, a long day trip from Adelaide can cover McLaren Vale and Victor Harbor, but you’ll miss the peninsula’s quieter corners.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Adelaide Hills – Just north, with charming towns like Hahndorf and excellent cool-climate wines.
- Kangaroo Island – A ferry from Cape Jervis takes you to this wildlife-rich island; allow at least three days.
- Yorke Peninsula – West across Gulf St Vincent, offering more beaches and fishing villages.
- Clare Valley – A two-hour drive north, known for its riesling trail and historic pubs.
- Barossa Valley – Another world-class wine region, about 1.5 hours north of Adelaide.
