Thundering into a fern-filled gorge, Fitzroy Falls is one of the New South Wales Southern Highlands’ most dramatic natural spectacles. The 81-metre cascade plunges over a sandstone escarpment into the pristine wilderness of Morton National Park, creating a misty, rainbowed spectacle that has captivated visitors for generations. Easy walking trails, abundant birdlife, and a smart visitor centre make this an essential stop on any Southern Highlands road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- The Main Lookout: A short, wheelchair-accessible path leads to the main viewing platform, where you’re face-to-face with the full force of the falls. Arrive early for the best light and fewer crowds.
- West Rim Walking Track: This 2.5 km return trail follows the escarpment edge, offering ever-changing perspectives of the falls and the deep, forested valley below. Keep an eye out for lyrebirds and wallabies.
- East Rim Walking Track: A slightly longer (3 km return) loop that takes you through tall eucalypt forest to quieter viewpoints, including a look back at the falls from downstream.
- Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre: With interactive displays on local geology, flora, and fauna, plus a café with a terrace overlooking the gorge, it’s the perfect spot to orient yourself and grab a coffee.
- Wildlife spotting: The park is home to superb lyrebirds, crimson rosellas, and the occasional wombat. Dawn and dusk are prime times for sightings.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1–2 hours here, which is ample time to take in the main lookout, walk one of the rim trails, and browse the visitor centre. If you’re keen to explore both rim walks and have a relaxed lunch, budget half a day. Fitzroy Falls is an ideal morning or afternoon stop – combine it with a visit to the nearby town of Bowral or the Kangaroo Valley for a full day out.
