Plunging dramatically into a rugged gorge on the New England Tablelands, Ebor Falls is a spectacular two-tiered waterfall that channels the Guy Fawkes River through ancient basalt columns. The sight and sound of water crashing over the 100-metre drop is utterly mesmerising, especially after heavy rain. This is a classic short stop for anyone driving between the Hunter Valley and the coast, offering a quick but powerful nature fix with well-maintained viewing platforms that put you right at the edge of the action.
Highlights & What to See
- Upper Falls Lookout: The main viewing platform delivers a head-on view of the upper cascade plunging into a pool before the river continues its journey. The basalt columns framing the falls are a geological highlight.
- Lower Falls Lookout: A short walk downstream reveals the second drop, equally impressive and often less crowded. The gorge here is deeper, and you can feel the spray on your face.
- Guy Fawkes River National Park: The falls are the gateway to this wild park, which protects pockets of ancient Antarctic beech forest and offers longer walks for those with time to explore.
- Waterfall Walk: An easy 1.2 km return trail connects the upper and lower lookouts, winding through eucalypt woodland with birdlife including wedge-tailed eagles and kingfishers.
- Picnic Area: There are well-placed tables and barbecues near the upper carpark, making it an ideal spot for a lunch break with a view.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30 minutes to an hour here, which is enough to walk both lookouts, take photos, and enjoy the scenery. If you're planning a picnic or want to explore a short section of the longer walking tracks, allow 1.5 hours. The falls are at their most powerful after rain, but the basalt columns are striking year-round. The site is a perfect 20-minute detour on the Waterfall Way drive between Dorrigo and Armidale.
