Dubbo might seem like an unlikely star in the middle of New South Wales, but this gutsy country city is a genuine surprise packet. It’s best known for the Western Plains Cultural Centre and the magnificent Taronga Western Plains Zoo, which lets you see rhinos, giraffes and lions roaming on open-range plains. But Dubbo also has a proud Wiradjuri heritage, a lively café scene and a sunburnt charm that grows on you.
Highlights & What to See
- Taronga Western Plains Zoo – One of Australia’s best open-range zoos. Hire a bike or drive your own car through vast enclosures; the giraffe and rhino herds are spellbinding.
- Dubbo Observatory – For mesmerising night skies. Book a tour to peer through powerful telescopes at the Southern Cross and Milky Way.
- Western Plains Cultural Centre – A dual-purpose museum and art gallery that tells the Wiradjuri story alongside colonial and contemporary art.
- Old Dubbo Gaol – A spine-tingling 19th-century prison with a self-guided audio tour; history buffs will love the tales of bushrangers and convicts.
- Dundullimal Homestead – A beautifully preserved 1840s slab hut, offering a glimpse into pioneer life on the Macquarie River.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give Dubbo two full days to do it justice. Day one: tackle the zoo (it takes 3–4 hours by bike or car) and the cultural centre. Day two: explore the gaol and Dundullimal, then grab a flat white at one of the Church Street cafés. A third day lets you relax into the regional pace and explore the river trails.
